The Peninsula District is planning a celebration to honor Martin Luther King on January 27, 2008. This event comes on the 40th anniversary of his death and will focus on the theme of “Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off." The keynote speaker will be Bishop Woodie White, Bishop in Residence at Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta. Five break-out sessions will follow on the topics of Domestic Violence (Ms. Kathy Coleman from "Break the Silence"), Teen/Media Culture (Dr. Timothy Sweeny principal of "The Achievable Dream" School and Ms. Michelle Banks, vice-principal Woodside H.S.), Schools (Dr. Ashby Kilgore, Superintendent for Newport News Public Schools), Gangs (Mr. Jeremy Walls, "Targeted Outreach" Program Coordinator for Gang Prevention) and Community Violence (Rev. David Cook, Peninsula Crime Victims). The break-out sections would be held simultaneously and last for an hour and 15 minutes.

Dr. Martin Luther King stood for non-violence and we want to honor him with an informative and celebratory afternoon that will be of value to our Peninsula residents in light of the recent and tragic acts of violence we have experienced in our own locality in the past year. We plan for this to be a multi-generational experience and have included appropriate youth events. The 3-hour event will be hosted by Bethany UMC in Hampton, beginning at 3 p.m. with refreshments following.
