The Bible has much to say about our being diligent, and it has praise for a diligent person. When we think about being diligent, it means being watchful, steady, earnest, energetic, persevering, attentive - all of which are good attributes.
At the recent seminar on "Science, Theology and Ethics," held at the Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center, the topic for discussion was about energy and our stewardship on the use of energy resources. So this brings us to the matter of how we as good stewards of our natural resources must be diligent in watching how we use them.
The seminar had three speakers or "presenters" who each approached the subject in a different manner. One presenter gave an overview of the various sources of energy, ranging from fossil fuels such as coal and gas, wind and tidal to solar.
A presenter form the United States Geological Survey, gave a presentation on the world oil and gas resources. He gave dates, showing that the largest known oil resources lie in the eastern hemisphere. With India and China becoming large energy users, some geologists are predicting that we will have an oil crisis in about 35 to 50 years.
A third presenter from West Virginia talked about how strip mining for coal is destroying our environment. He discussed the grave necessity for legislation to control this industry. Nuclear power was seen as an increasing use for the generation of electric power. All of this discussion ranged around the limited availability of natural resources and how we must be prudent in our use of them.
This brings us back to the topic of "diligency." We must be diligent in the use of our natural resources while we must also be aware of the opportunities in technology to develop new sources. The discussion included energy conservation by us as individuals, including changing our life style to use less energy in our homes and churches and in our transportation.
The recent election topics by our candidates touched on this subject. There was discussion about our transportation needs, and how we will be forced to conserve energy. It behooves us all as the church to be diligent in keeping knowledgeable about these topics so that we can become good stewards of our resources. "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." Proverbs 21:5
