It is time to sign up for the Red Kettle Campaign for the Salvation Army. If you will ring the bell for one, two or more hours with me, please sign up on the sheet in the front hall. The campaign runs from December 1 through December 24. We will set a time and place that is acceptable with you. It is an important activity and FUMC needs to be involved! You can choose day or night and we will only select busy, well-lighted and safe areas!
Virginia McGrory, who has been working with Operation Christmas Child, tells me that we have contributed 60 shoe boxes for the children. That is really great for our first participation! First UMC's fellowship has done it up right and Virginia is so pleased with the number of people who participated and everyone's enthusiasm.
Starting in January, Virginia and I will be co-captains of Missions. As the job has grown, help was needed and I am so pleased that she has accepted.
December is the busiest time of the year for all of us, but it is especially busy for mission activities. It is a time when we make special efforts to give help and support to those in our own community-the homeless, the single parent families, the poor, sick and neglected ones in our midst. Children especially are vulnerable. The Red Kettle Campaign, the PORT Program for the homeless, the 50 families who receive the food boxes that we prepare with love-all these activities are a blessing to us as well as a blessing to all the recipients.
Mark the PORT dates on your calendar, please. We will receive our guests for supper on Wednesday evening, December 28, 2005 and they will leave us on Wednesday morning, January 4, 2006. Our sign-up chart will be put up about the first week in December in the back hall as always.
Six large bags of toiletries were collected and donated to LINK for this year's PORT program. Thanks to all those who thought of the homeless and brought soaps, shampoos and lotions during this summer. We collect them throughout the year. (Reported by Jerry Dodson)
Monetta Joyce and her ladies have made
lovely baby/crib blankets. We have some
Katrina refugees with babies who will get
these blankets. Alice Wilson and her niece
have knitted 90 caps for our homeless guests.
We will give them out when they come in
December. Thank you, ladies for sharing
your talents with those in need.
Christmas Food Boxes
Mr. Warren Baker, from the Department of Social Services has sent us our list of 50 families to receive our Christmas Food Boxes. You will be hearing more about this shortly. Read the bulletin carefully each week.
This may seem like a tremendous amount of time, but analyze it if you can give:
2 hrs. to ring the bell for Salvation Army
1 - 2 hrs. to help pack, sort or deliver food boxes
3 - 4 hrs. to PORT
a total of 5 - 8 hours spread out over 30 days or so. That is not too much when you think of how many people are helped by those few hours. What a joyous Christmas we will have after activities such as these. Baby Jesus is smiling.
General Assembly Day
Before I forget it, please put on your calendar to reserve Thursday, January 26, 2006. We will be heading to Richmond for the United Methodist Day at General Assembly. We will take the van, so reserve your place now! Call if you have questions, 877-2569, June Loving.
Your mission team looks forward to working with each of you during this busy month. Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year! Blessings to all!
