On January 16-27, 2006 a team from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church will travel to Israel with United Methodists from other Conferences as part of the General Board of Global Ministries efforts to under gird Annual Conferences seeking to move the General Conference resolutions from words to action. These groups will engage in mission study and justice advocacy in a "land longing to be holy." The trip will allow not only time to hear from multiple voices in the land and engage in mission work, but also to do planning and training both within and across conference lines on issues of mission, advocacy, and education. It will promote respect for the human dignity of every person as a child of God, emphasizing that upholding human rights and international law are key components for a just and lasting peace in Palestine and Israel. Individuals participating in this trip will do so at their own expense. The total cost of the trip will run approximately $2,000 per person. Wes Astin, Dean of the Chapel and Religious Life at Ferrum College will lead the team from Virginia. The team will have the opportunity to meet with Israeli and Palestinian religious leaders, partake in solidarity visits to Palestinian and Israeli families and worship with the religious communities, engage in conversations with political and human rights leaders across the spectrum of both communities, visit Advance Projects and learn more about the work the UMC is doing in this part of the world, and strategize with Palestinian & Israeli Peace workers about the most effective methods to communicate what is needed for a just and durable peace.
If you would like to take part in this experience feel free to contact Rev. Wes Astin, Dean of the Chapel, Ferrum College, Ferrum, VA 24088.
