Mission Notes

June Loving, Captain
Lines Double
Time is fleeting faster every year; can you believe it is September, again?

That means it is time to get busy. What has happened since last we were together on the printed page? During July, the youth took a mission trip. They worked in Christiansburg at Fieldstone UMC from July 16 through 22. The men had a large delegation attend the Purdue University Rally also in July. During the weekend of July 22-24, the UMW had 13 attending the School of Christian Mission in Blackstone. They were: Mary Charlotte and Maynard Corson, Russell and Louise Fox, June Loving, Judy Talbert, Gerry Turner, Margaret Warren, Erleen and James Wheeling, Cathy Williamson, and Kathy and Charlie Yates. Our study topics were: Public Education, India & Pakistan, and Children of the Bible.

Food Lion has sent us another quarterly check for $27.62. Each time you buy anything there using your MVP card we can get credit and you get any special prices offered. If you have not gotten your MVP card yet, stop in any Food Lion and request one from the manager. Once you have your card, give Gerry Turner (in the office) your card number and she will enter your name and number with all other FUMC members who are already listed. We have to re-enter our number only twice a year. The amount seems small but it totals to nearly $100 a year that can be added to the youth fund for mission activities. Everyone benefits and it does not cost us a penny.

Remember if you already have your card, just have Gerry re-enter it and it is good for another six months. Stop in today or call if that is more convenient.

Recycling

Inkjet Cartridges and Cell Phones have been sent in and we have received those checks as well ($136 total). More money for the youth activities. Keep them coming!

Eyeglasses continue to come in and Don Cockburn takes them over to the Lions Club Recycling Center for us. Remember that hearing aides are also accepted.

LINK/PORT

Jerry Dodson is still collecting toiletries for the homeless. That includes: soap, wash cloths, shampoo, tooth brushes, tooth paste, hand lotion, small packets of tissues, pocket combs, disposable razors, etc. When you bring them in, leave them in the office or give them to Jerry directly.

We are also continuing the second Sunday fool collections for PORT. Jerry and the "Over-the-Hill" Gang usually deliver that food to the LINK office.

Our Missionary

John Elmore, our missionary in Chile will be visiting churches supporting him during September and October. Rev. LeGault has made several attempts to contact the person setting up his schedule. So far, he has not been able to connect with a representative. Watch the Sunday bulletins for any new information, if it is not listed elsewhere in this Tower.

Mission Festival

Reserve the dates from September 25 through October 2 for this major mission event. The planning committee is working diligently to make it bigger and better than last year. Watch for posters and notices for more information.

Yes, we will have several trips, videos to see, a large gift exhibit and sale, multiple brochures to keep us informed on the broader scope of United Methodist activities around this country and around the world. Also, a few surprises, as well as one meal, maybe two and a very special event. The planning committee is so excited about this wonderful time to delve into mission opportunities and experiences

Eastern Shore - Migrant Workers Mission

On August 10, Sonny and Sandra Forbes and I went over to see Rev. Carmen Colonna. If you remember, we collected beans and rice for the workers. As usual, our church fellowship gave from their hearts. We took 104 lbs. of rice and 51 lbs. of beans. Carmen was very pleased with the large quantity. Also, there were six large bags of clothes, one bag of baseball type hats and a bag of handmade baby blanket (made by our special knitting ladies. Thanks, Monetta Joyce).
