THE POWER OF PLAY may make as much difference to your well being as the most stellar health habits. Fun may enhance your health because it eases stress levels. Research shows that people with persistent levels of stress have higher risk for health ills such as heart attacks.

More people and researchers are finding that a key to getting healthy is to get a life - a social life, to be exact. There is convincing evidence that belonging to diverse social networks is associated with lower mortality, survival of heart attacks, less risk for cancer recurrence and resistance to infection. Having a group to "play" with doesn't just prevent illness, it may also aid in a fuller recovery.

Good marriages have healthier hearts and other health issues. However, the quality of marriage is also linked to other health issues. Like friendship and other forms of social support, animal companions offer health perks, such as lowering blood pressure. Having a sense of humor decreases blood levels of potentially destructive stress hormones that make you vulnerable to illness. People with chronic stress have depressed immune systems. But when they watched a one-hour comedy, their levels of stress hormones fell and their bodies' immune systems improved. LAUGHTER IS THE SOUND OF THE BODY HEALING!

We have many opportunities to enhance our social life in church. Let's become active and become healthier. Seek new opportunities to meet people and make friends. God gave us life to enjoy.

Voting on a

Warm Summer Evening

by Joanne Bates

Why do I have the feeling that a few scores were subtly settled on Tuesday evening, July 12, when City Council voted 5-2 to permit the establishment of a billiards parlor in the Warwick Shopping Center. Many residents of the affected neighborhood spoke out at the meeting against the opening of a pool hall across the street from their homes. The late hours of operation, the sale of alcoholic beverages and the sheer number of automobiles involved will disturb the dark and quiet neighborhood they love, they claimed.

But some of the people in favor of the pool hall evidently felt an empathy for the pool enthusiasts, because they thought the neighborhood was judging them critically and unfairly. These people claimed that they themselves "understood" what that feels like in one's life, and so they were determined to give the pool players a vote of confidence.

Whatever the motives of all involved, it will be interesting to see how this venture, opening a pool hall in the middle of a residential area, plays out.
