Our 4th of July picnic will be held in the Fellowship Hall on, of course, July 4. As tradition has it, it will be a covered-dish, with Family Life supplying barbeque, cole slaw, hot dogs, and drinks. We'll begin with games at 5:00 p.m. and eat at 5:30 p.m. All of this will follow with our Sing Out America sing-along. See you there.
Pick a night and meet us at the ball game. We'll be there on July 5, 9, 12 and 22; and August 8. Give us a call to let us know you are coming. Game time is 7:05 p.m. General admission is $4. Jerry & Martha Dodson (599-4527)
On May 29, 2004 a memorial was dedicated in Washington D.C. honoring the men and women who fought in World War II. Most who fought that war will never know that a memorial was built for their deeds. 1500 of these veterans die everyday, their stories lost to the world forever. However, John Wilson's (a pfc at the Battle of the Bulge) will not be lost because it has now been recorded for all to see and hear forever.
John Emory Wilson Jr., better known at First Church as Jack Wilson has recorded a DVD as part of the Veterans History Project. This is a remarkable collection of interviews and documentary materials spanning much of the twentieth century. Found in these sources are compelling accounts of wartime service from men and women, civilian and military, representing many ranks, jobs, branches of services, and theaters of war. Their stories-told in their own words through oral history interviews-teach us, amuse us, and inspire us. They also sometimes sadden us, with tales of lost lives, lost time, and lost innocence, all in service to our country.
Jack served in WWII in 1942 -1945 in Germany and Omaha Beach, France. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Croix de Guerre. The DVD is available for viewing at the Main Street Library in the Virginia Room. It runs for 23 minutes. Unfortunately it cannot be checked out.
