Garage Sale Results

ummen_small.gif

A heartfelt thank you to all church members who made the men's annual garage sale such a huge success this year. We received literally hundreds of quality items from a large majority of the congregation; almost more than could be sold in a four-hour time frame. To date, proceeds from the sale have exceeded $1,025.

A large percentage of the funds will be contributed to Heart Haven, an organization whose purpose is to construct a home on the Peninsula to house mentally disabled adults who cannot find alternative housing. The men's group is extremely appreciative for all the help from the many church members in making this event so successful this year.

Nine men from First Church Leaving for Purdue in July

Our local Methodist Men's Fellowship at First Church is proud to have a total of nine men from our group to represent our church at the 9th National Gathering of United Methodist Men's Rally at Purdue University in mid-July. This number is one of the larger representations of any church located in Virginia. The men attending the retreat to be held July 15 - 17 include: Dave Williamson, Andrew Williamson, Ken Coleman, Bob Sanchez, Ed Waugaman, Bob Kernell, Kirill Pavlovsky, Jonathan Smith and John LeGault.

An estimated 4,000 men will be in attendance from all 50 states and a large number of many foreign countries. A few of our group will also participate in a national golf tournament to be held on July 14. Any hole in ones made by our men will be promptly reported to the congregation upon our return!

Please pray for our safety in travel and that there will be an inspirational retreat for all of those in attendance. Some men attending the meeting have agreed to present a detailed report of the weekend's activities at an upcoming United Methodist Men's breakfast meeting. Stay tuned for more details on this upcoming program.

Annual Conference Report

The 223rd Session of the Virginia Annual Conference The United Methodist Church was held at the Hampton Coliseum with the theme "We Are One in Christ" with the stained glass designed logo with the images in the center of the cross drawn by Barbara Jent.

Brian W. Manwiller, President of the United Methodist Men delivered the report in spite of his several years of battling cancer. Please add him to your prayers as he has many medical restraints. United Methodist Men in supporting Heart Haven opened their tenth home and supported maintenance on existing homes plus paying down mortgages.

United Methodist Men also collected and loaded 1751 flood buckets to assist victims of hurricanes in Florida during 2004.

The Annual United Methodist Men's Spiritual Retreat in November drew men to Blackstone from Delaware, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, to bring scripture to life under the theme "Men Sent by God," during which 374 men were blessed by growing spiritually through fellowship.

Sixteen men from the Peninsula are registered to attend Purdue in July, nine from our church. Do you want to make it a perfect 10? Call the church office or Ken Coleman, Dave Williamson or Dick Kintigh to complete your registration forJuly 15 - 17 at the Ninth Annual Gathering of United Methodist Men.

If you cannot make the July trip to Purdue, consider the Spiritual Retreat in Blackstone on the 4 - 6 of November of this year with Dr. Bill Bouknight.

United Methodist Men in a joint project with UMCOR and The Society of St. Andrew are

leading a drive to remove hunger in America called "Meals for Millions" Mission Project. Hunger relief advocates anticipates 54 million servings offered in the name of Jesus Christ will provide for our nation's hungry.

As a United Methodist Man, you are supporting the elimination of hunger, increasing Scouting activities for youth, providing Upper Room Hot lines for prayers, Camp Rainbow for disadvantaged youth in Virginia and community activities in the name of Jesus Christ.

Did you know 35 million Americans live below the poverty line and rely on food assistance? One seventh, 840 million people experience hunger and many malnutrition? One in five was turned away last year because American agencies had no food?

Did you know 93% of the family is active in the church when the man is active? 32% of the family is active in the church if the woman is active and 4% of the family is active in the church if the child is active?

Please consider supporting your church, community and family to the Glory of God.

Something to Ponder

$28 billion would end malnutrition, immunize all children against preventible diseases and end illiteracy in the world.

What do Americans spend their money on?

$ 550 billion on legal gambling
103 billion on fast food
60 billion on soft drinks
45 billion on beer
33 billion on weight control products
31 billion on pet products
30 billion on cosmetic products
24 billion on candy
20 billion on ice cream
18 billion on snack foods

Could we change the world and find the $28 billion for others?

Peace and Grace in Christ,

Dick Kintigh
