Final Opportunity to Work with VBS!
We are still in need of persons willing to teach (preschool or upper elementary grades), early morning childcare, or work in the nursery. If you could help in any of these areas, please contact Annette Pomeroy (595-0383) or Lisa Coleman (356-9990). Teenagers (7th - 12th graders) to serve as youth assistants are still needed.
First Church is responsible for the volunteer refreshments on Monday, July 11. If you could provide something - vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers, brownies, fresh fruit - please contact Annette Pomeroy.
This fall when you walk through the children's Sunday School area, something new and exciting will be happening. In one room you will find the children moving and singing to the rhythm of music about God's creation of the world. In another room the children will be creating a mural depicting the seven days of creation. In a third room you will find the children writing poetry on creation. These are just some of the ways the children will be learning about the biblical story of Creation found in Genesis 1-2.
The rotation-learning model takes one biblical story or text and spends an agreed-upon number of weeks exploring the same story through different centers: art, music, storytelling, cooking, games, reflection/writing, community service, and brainteasers/puzzles. Each class/group of children spends the entire morning in one of these leaning centers, then rotates to a different one the next week, and so on.
Adults lead the activities in the centers for a designated number of weeks. The advantages of the rotation-learning model are 1) the repetition of important stories and text that help the children master the story over a number of weeks; 2) teacher-friendly lesson plans attract persons who are willing to teach for only short periods of time; 3) the curriculum is flexible to calendar, resources, talents, and facilities; and 4) the children become more involved in learning through a variety of mediums.
Look for more on this exciting new program and how you can be involved.
