Mission Notes

June Loving, Captain
Lines Double
Here we are in 2005! What a wonderful, blessed year we had in 2004. What does 2005 hold in store? The possibilities, the challenges and the opportunities for service are all ahead of us.

Each year our family of faith is tested and as I see it, we grow stronger in our walk with God. Pray that we can continue to grow in faith and works.

Let's review the 2004 works as we look toward 2005.

Homeless - PORT

As this is being written we are preparing to house and feed the homeless for our December/January week. The onslaught of cold weather has added to the desperate condition of the men and women. We are expecting from 60 - 100 each night. The sign-up board is not filled, but I will be making some calls and our members are always compassionate and helpful when needed. (That means YOU!)

There will be a full report of our PORT hosting in the February Tower.

Bell-Ringers for the Salvation Army

This was our first attempt at bell ringing and it was meager, but at least a beginning. There were eight people signed up for Monday, December 20, but we could not connect with the Salvation Army to get a spot for our ringing. Next year we will get underway sooner and it should go smoothly. Thank you, Rita and Jack Potter, Valorie Williamson, Sara-Ann and Annette Pomeroy, Jay and Cathy Nicholson and Bill and Shelby Knoble for offering your services.

We were able to get in one session on December 14. District Superintendent, Myrtle Frances Hatcher and I, with our Santa Claus hats, rang our bells in front of Penny's and had a cold but glorious time trying to out ring each other.

Christmas Food Boxes

Our list of 50 families from Social Services each received two large boxes of food. We had to replace one name, because of a death, and correct one address, but all else went smoothly. The thing that impressed me the most was the reaction of our congregation to the need for an added $3,000 to pay for the food. On Sunday, December 12 we had $1,000 and we needed $4,000 by December 16 to pay the bill. After an appeal to the members in both worship services on the 12th , we were thrilled and very thankful to find that on the morning of December 16 that we had $4,200 and the check was written with more to spare. All the boxes go to their recipients by December 22. Thank you!!

Marguerite Thompson

By the way, did you know that we started this Christmas Food Box tradition in 1986? Marguerite Thompson was chairman and she developed the food list, arranged the order with the grocery store, got a list of names and started the whole procedure. It has become an important part of our Christmas giving tradition. Thanks, Marguerite!
