Myrna Young has presented the library with a handbook for living that was written by His Holiness The Dalai Lama with Howard C. Cutler. This book is entitled The Art of Happiness and can be located with the new books on the bookshelf under the picture at the far end of the library. Thank you, Myrna.

Rev. LeGault has placed a book in the library entitled History of the Christian Church. It is written by Williston Walker. Thanks, John.

We also have a new book entitled World Religions written by Lewis M. Hopfe.

New Books -- This classification is reserved for books that have been entered into your library in the last six months.

To help you locate the books of your choice we have computer generated lists by author, subject and title. These lists are located on the table. Mary Barker is planning to have lists using key words to help facilitate your book search.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Frances L. Brown Whitley who died May 9, 2004, in James River Convalescent Center. Frances served this church faithfully for 22 years before her retirement for health reasons. Frances will be remembered for her many hours of hard work and devotion in keeping First Church in excellent shape at all times as she quietly went about her daily chores. Frances is survived by her sons, Kevin. F. Whitley and Edwin C. Whitley, two granddaughters and brother, Harvey Brown.

United Methodist Women

Gerry Beale Turner, President

Well, Virginia Annual Conference has come and gone. Many of us helped in various ways during the conference -- not only with registration -- but for the many responsibilities that the United Methodist Women were committed to. Thank you!

I'm pleased to report that Jane Sydney Meloy took one layette, 34 school kits, and 82 health kits to conference for Church World Service. In addition we sent $622.21 to purchase more kits and/or help with shipping expenses. Well done.

It is still not too late to register for School of Christian Mission. Deadline is July 10. I have registration forms in the front office.

I also want to let you know about a wonderful opportunity to share God's love with some special children the week of July 12 - 16. The United Methodist Women of the Peninsula have been asked to do a Vacation Bible School at The Wesley Community Center in Portsmouth. How exciting to have an opportunity to have a hands-on mission project so close to us. If you would like to be part of this, contact Carolyn Knight, Peninsula District UMW President at 851-6758 ASAP. She will be happy to hear from you.

Hope you are having a great summer. Don't forget to read. See you in September!

Your Sister in Christ.

Gerry
