Kits for Conference

by Jane Sydney Meloy

heartlogo.gif
In just a few more months, we will be taking our kits to Annual Conference and joining with the many thousands which are coming from all over our conference. How exciting! There are many children and adults hoping to receive beautiful crayons and paper in addition to items for health care, etc. We will be storing the kits upstairs in the UMW room until they are ready to be packed and taken to Annual Conference in June. If you wish to make a donation to support this effort, please make checks payable to "First United Methodist Church" and drop in the offering plate or take to the church office. We also need school bags made. If you have a sewing machine and are willing to make school bags, please contact Gerry Turner at 595-0383 for directions.

  1. Please note a few changes from previous years:
  2. In the Health Kit, you can now use EITHER a metal nail file OR a nail clipper.
  3. Health Kits should be put in a one-gallon zippered bag -- NOT wrapped in the hand towel with ribbon or yarn.
  4. The school bags MUST have a closure now -- button, Velcro, snap or zipper.
  5. Baby Kits require SIX cloth diapers, NOT four.

Watch bulletins or next month's newsletter for a complete list.

THANKS FOR ALL YOU ARE DOING AND ... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Special Mission Recognition for 2003

by Judy Talbert

A donation has been sent to Missions in the name of the person honored by the Special Mission Recognition for 2003.

Even before joining our group, she was a friend to UMW. Many of us have worked with her and been supported by her willingness to help in every way.

She has done the children's time in our worship service and has been a lay reader.

She has served as the Global Missions Chair for our church. She is responsible for placing the Mission Moment, from our Prayer Calendar, in our bulletin each week. This reminds our whole congregation of our responsibility to the world mandated by Jesus.

She initiated and implemented the Children's Area, as a new effort during the Craft Show last year.

She is responsible for forming the teen circle in our unit. This circle is one of only a few on the district. She continues to be their leader, transporting them to district events like the prayer breakfast and conference events like the School of Christian Mission at Blackstone. This circle under her guidance supported our UMW by baking, as a group, for our craft show/bake Sale, working in the Children's Area and serving at the Fashion Show Luncheon. She nurtures them as well as leads them to outreach and service in the community.

In addition to printing our yearbook, which she has done for many years, as our church secretary, she has also updated and compiled it. This job has previously been that of the membership chair and others.

She is the Peninsula District Communication Chair and is responsible for the District Yearbook and Newsletter.

She is a member of circle 5, has served on our UMW Executive Board as recording secretary and is currently serving as the UMW President.

For all her hard work it is our honor to present the 2003 Special Mission Recognition Mission Pin to Gerry Beale Turner.
