Historically Speaking "Our Women In Mission" - Continued from Page 6

1939  The Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Methodist Protestant Church merged to form The Methodist Church. The various women's home and foreign missionary societies and other women's groups of the three uniting churches were joined and became the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
1940 The Wesleyan Service Guild remained a separate organization. (Young women and working women belonged to the Guild) We had and active Wesleyan Service Guild in our church.
1870 Women in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South began enlisting children and youth. In Virginia, we had the Rosebud Missionary Society, founded by the Reverend Thomas Horace Campbell and his wife, Virginia Henry. The society was organized in their home on New Year's Day, 1879, and named after their youngest girl, Rosebud. Our church had an active Rosebud Missionary Society for several years.
1968 The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren merged to form The United Methodist Church. The women's organizations of the two denominations merged in the new United Methodist Church under the names, Women's Society of Christian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild. Administrative responsibility was assigned to the Women's Division of the Board of Missions.
1972 The Women's organization in The United Methodist Church merged to form one inclusive organization with the name, "United Methodist Women."

Our UMW is so well organized. On the conference level, we have the annual School of Christian Mission, the Spiritual Life Retreat and other meetings. We have the greatest abundance of materials, including magazines, books, pamphlets, etc. Our organization affords many opportunities for enriching our spiritual and intellectual life. We are engaged in numerous money-making projects for missions.
