This year we are observing a half of century of worshiping in our present sanctuary. Because of the many noteworthy happenings during 1954, we will exam that year closely.
Our second sanctuary has a seating capacity of approximately 550. (Our first sanctuary, built around 1921, seated 250 people, but by opening the two adjacent classrooms, 400 could be seated.)
The construction for the new building began in October 1953, while the first service was held in it on September 5, 1954. Our minister in 1954 was Dr. Alfred Brackette Clarke (1954-1960). The Reverend J. Calvin Dugger had been our pastor (1947-1954) during the planning and building of the sanctuary. He returned to participate in the opening services, September 5, 1954.
A half of century has brought wear and tear. Now plans are being discussed to paint the sanctuary and install a new air conditioning system in time for the half-century celebration in September 2004.
What else memorable happened in 1954?
Our original name, Hilton Village Methodist Church, was changed in 1954 to First Methodist Church.
The Methodist Men's Club, forerunner of the United Methodist Men, was organized February 23, 1954.
Our newsletter, now known as The Church Tower, was inaugurated October 1954. It is published monthly and mailed to every church family.
The first family night supper was held October 13, 1954, centered around "fellowship, fun, and food." Now, held every other Wednesday evening, this event includes a supper, and afterwards a program.
We are so richly blessed to have the Reverend John LeGault, as our pastor and his wife, Jane, who prepares our Wednesday night suppers.

I want to express my sincere thanks to all of you
who remembered me during my illness with calls,
cards, visits, food and flowers. Your concern and
thoughtfulness brightened my days and meant so
very much to me and my family. In Christ's Love, Grace Woltz |
