ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD):

ADHD is characterized mainly by the features of distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It occurs in both children and adults, and interferes with the person's ability to function normally in their day-to-day activities, such as work, school, and at home. An accurate diagnosis is often difficult and should be done by a mental health professional.

Symptoms that are considered:
Are these behaviors excessive, long-term, and pervasive. Signs of inattention include:
  1. Becoming easily distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds.
  2. Failing to pay attention to details and making careless mistakes.
  3. Rarely following instructions carefully and completely.
  4. Losing or forgetting things like toys, or pencils, books, and tools needed for a task.
Signs of hyperactivity and impulsivity are:
  1. Feeling restless, often fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirming.
  2. Running, climbing, or leaving a seat, in situations where sitting or quiet is expected.
  3. Blurting out answers before hearing the whole question.
  4. Having difficulty waiting in line or for a turn

Also, some of the symptoms of ADHD can manifest as anxiety or depression. Medication is used cautiously when an accurate diagnosis is made. Many medications are now available and are prescribed according to the severity of the symptoms. Side effects are common and close medical follow-up is required. It is impossible to address all the concerns of this disorder in this brief forum. Questions should be addressed with a medical doctor and referred to a mental health clinician, if indicated. Remember, these symptoms can often mimic signs of other problems.

Bereavement Support Committee

Margaret Allen and Walter Thomas, Co-Chairs

Our sincere thanks to all of our committee for a job well done! Each member has been most cooperative, willing to serve, and eager to please. It has been a pleasure to work with them and to all of you who furnished goodies for the receptions, we thank you, too! We could not have done it without you and your support.

During the year we have held 12 receptions at the church, and carried food to two homes. We have served over 1200 guests.

This coming year we are trying to add an additional co-chairs of arrangements foe each month. In order to do this, we need a few more members on our committee. If you feel you can assist, please call us (596-7895) or Bette Jones at the church office.

The co-chairs for the month of February are Sibyl French (826-1514), Dot Hamilton (826-6608), and Gertrude Parker (596-1291).
