Former pastor of First Church passes away

The Rev. Clifford Ramsey, 100, of the Hermitage in Richmond and formerly of Franklin County, passed away Friday, November 28, 2003. He was born February 16, 1903, at Sydnorsville, Franklin County, VA. He was the son of the late Dyer Woodson Ramsey and Minnie Florence Matthews Ramsey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Washburn Ramsey, two sons, James Calvin Ramsey and Leon Clifford Ramsey.

He received his education at Ferrum Training School, Randolph-Macon College with an A.B. Degree, followed by a four-year course at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, GA. He served as minister in the Virginia Conference for 43 years.

His first appointment was his home church, South Franklin Circuit in the Danville District, followed by Cascade Circuit, Capron Circuit, First Church (Newport News), Board Street (Portsmounth), Clavary (Arlington), First Church (Salem), Wesley Memorial (Richmond), Oakton Church, Saint Luke's (Arlington), Saint Andrews Church (Alexandria) and Highland Springs (Richmond). In addition to being a pastor, he served on the Board of Trustees of Ferrum College for seven years, during which time he was given "The Distinguished Service Award" for his service to the Methodist church in the various localities in the Virginia conference.

He is survived by his daughter, Mollie Ramsey Cox and husband, William N. Cox, Calabash, NC; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Dorothy M. Ramsey, Glen Allen, VA.

Funeral services were conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel, Saturday, December 6, 2003. Interment followed in the Ramsey Family Cemetery at Sydnorsville. In lieu of flowers, it was Rev. Ramsey's request that memorial contributions be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2101 Goose Dam Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
