If you were not at Wednesday Night Fellowship several weeks back, you missed the announcement about the hand-knitted caps made by Monetta Joyce and her industrious, talented ladies. They made 166 stocking caps for the PORT homeless program. Her group included: Mary Lou Carter, Alice Wilson, Monetta Joyce, Neva Parker, and Louise Laughridge. The first three are FUMC members and the other two ladies were friends. The caps in three large bags were taken to PORT/LINK and have been put to good use already. When the weather turns really cold, they will be a blessing to the men who receive them. Monetta requested that we express her appreciation to all who contributed the yarn. Their goal is 500 caps! Can you knit? Do you want to join the group? Call Monetta Joyce (930-4876).
The clothing drive is doing well. So far, we have taken 6-8 large bags of clothing to LINK. In January, there will be a more exact reporting, so watch for it in the January Tower. Jerry Dodson reports that the Good News Sunday School Class has collected a large quantity of toiletries for PORT also. Please continue to contribute to both of these collections. As you clean out your clothes closet and get rid of items too large or too small, bring them to church so someone else can use them.
October was World Communion Collection. We collected $535.50 for that cause. November was Blanket and Tool Communion Sunday. It was very gratifying to know that with the $1,178.00 collected, we were able to provide: 110 Blankets
1 Sewing Machine
2 Commercial Fishing Nets
1 Family Size Tent (to house a refugee family).
These items will provide warmth for many and tools for others to use to support their families. Thank you each and everyone for your generous spirit.
Also, our church was represented at the CROP Walk on October 26 by seven youth and three adults. With the support of the congregation we surpassed our goal of $600 by raising $627. That was an increase of $180 over last year. Thank you for all your generous support of this project which works toward alleviating world hunger including hunger in our own backyard.
Food Lion "Shop and Share" program is making progress, if you have not given us your MVP #, please do so immediately. Remember that this costs you nothing and at the end of the quarter (Dec. 31st) when our check comes - that money will go to our Youth for conferences, trips, and other special events. Turn in your name and card # to Gerry in the office.
Remember to bring in your inkjet cartridges for recycling for CASH. Turn them into the office and Gerry will put them in the Mission Mail Box. As you know, the money collected from this recycling will also go into the Youth fund for their activities. We are eager to encourage the Youth to develop their leadership as well as activities just for fun.
