We've all experienced it at one time or another. That infuriating inability to get back to sleep in the wee hours. Why do the day's troubles loom so much larger then and seem more ominous?
Faint whispers of despair may even intrude on our consciousness. It would be tempting at such moments to just succumb to the "Dark night of the soul."
Yet in this absolute solitude we have a unique opportunity to talk with God. We can ask for His help with our problems. We can pray for new resolve to do better in our daily lives. We can pray for His love and blessings for our loved ones. We can pray for peace in the world. And especially, pray for those oppressed by war and other devastations.
Sometimes when we are in a wide-awake state and our minds are racing, we come up with a wonderful idea. Or the beginning of a new song or some lines of poetry. Could this be God speaking to us?
(I admit that in the dark nights following Hurricane Isabel, I spent some wakeful hours wondering if my perishable food was safe enough, and then my mind became busy conjuring up ideas for fixing hot meals on the little Sterno stove.)
Next day, in spite of our lost sleep, we'll probably feel about as good as usual. And we'll be much the better person for having had a quiet time with God during the night.
"Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place." Psalm 18:5
