CHEMICALLY SENSITIVE? The use of perfumes, colognes and products that contain fragrance have increased tremendously over the past decades. Very little thought is given to the numerous products used on a daily basis that contain fragrances unless you happen to be one of the growing number of people adversely affected by scented products. These products may be perfume, cosmetics, laundry products, home cleaning agents and cigarette smoke - to name a few.
Fragrances are composed of materials that quickly get into the air. Once in the air, these materials pose serious health concerns for many with asthma, allergies, migraines, chronic lung disease, and other health conditions. These people often have difficulties working, obtaining medical care, and going about activities of daily living.
People that suffer with these problems have learned what they can do to avoid a reaction. What can we do to try and assist them? First, we need to be more sensitive to those around us. For example: are we wearing our favorite perfume when in close contact with others? Is our hair spray a little too heavy? Are we smoking in undesignated areas? We do not own the environment. It is there for all to enjoy and remain as healthy as possible. This is the age of "Aroma Therapy" and it is wonderful for rest and relaxation. This therapy is not for everyone.
The United Methodist Church is researching the far-reaching impact of environmental pollution in places where church people are assembled. In part: "……. Indoor air pollution and fragrances worn by fellow worshipers can make the church one of the most difficult places to go for chemically sensitive persons. This is something we all need to be aware of to ensure a healthier healthy environment.
