New Books:
Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver, donated by Circle 6 in memory of Natalie Spears
Quick and Easy Fun Learning Activities for Three-Year-Olds, donated by Billie Way. (This book, written by Grace Jasmine, would be of particular assistance to parents, grandparents, teachers, baby sitters or anyone who deals with three-year-olds.)
Kathy Yates, a new member of the library committee, has been busy cataloging John LeGualt's recorded sermons. You can locate the audio tapes in the small bookcase under the picture that is between the lounge chairs. These sermons will be kept on file for one year; then the cassettes will be reused. Come, check out a sermon that you may have missed or take one to a shut-in. (Bette Jones and John also take them to some of our shut-ins.) Kathy has also contributed some practical suggestions for improving our library that might be implemented in the future. We are happy to welcome both Charlie and Kathy to the committee.
The Rev. Phineas S. Boyer, 87, retired since 1982 died July 24. He began his ministerial career in 1956 at Branch Memorial. In his retirement, he served Aldersgate (Norfolk) and Epworth (Ashland). Survivors include daughter Charlotte Jones; two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren. Rev. Boyer served First Church as a minister of visitation.
We look forward to our time together in fellowship and study, beginning on September 8, the first Monday after Labor Day. We meet each week in the Fellowship Hall on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. Please come join us for this great opportunity to enrich your spiritual life.
Russell and Louise Fox will begin our classes this time with the mission study which was taught this past summer at the School of Christian Mission at VUMAC. Our text book was Exodus, The Journey to Freedom, written by Christine and Bernard Keels. Russell and Louise will begin by outlining the Book of Exodus in terms of its history and religious ritual. They will teach the class on September 8 and September 15.
On September 22, Erleen Wheeling and Mary Charlotte Corson will bring to light stereotyping and racism in the Exodus story, and show how this is all manifested in our society today.
On September 29, Judy Talbert and Margaret Warren will explore how the Exodus experience helped the Hebrew people to "know God." They will also discuss the parallels in the experience of the Hebrews with that of the African American experience in the United States and in Methodism.
Beginning the first Monday in October, (October 6), we will return to our study of the Book of Acts, beginning with Chapter 12. For your assignment, we suggest that you read the first twelve chapters of Acts, the Book that tells the history of the beginning of the Christian Church. Please bring your text book -- the Bible, and a note book if you plan to take notes.
