Something very exciting came to my attention this week, Planet Green. This is an environment saving, church fund-raising, recycling program. Inkjet cartridges are recycled and the church is given money (for missions) for each shipment. Before we get involved, I am sending for more information and will present this to the mission committee and to the council for consideration. Russell Fox and the Church and Society concerns may also be interested in this as a joint recycling effort. However, in the meantime, please save all empty inkjet cartridges from your printers at home, in the office, or where ever they are. I will be happy to collect and hold them while we evaluate the program they are offering.
In the May "Tower," the Mission Notes
discussed the idea of "Every Member - A
Missionary!" Since that article appeared,
one person has already asked for
information that will allow her to examine
one of the many opportunities in missions,
whether it be within our local church, our
city, our district, our state or somewhere in
our world. These opportunities of service
are plentiful and many require only a
willingness to serve others, while some are
available only to specially trained persons.
If you have questions or want information,
leave a note in the Mission Mail Box in the
front office. You will receive brochures and
print outs that describe only a few of the
multiple ways to serve as a mission
volunteer.
Mentioning the Mission Mail Box brings to
mind some of the mail recently received.
Each week we get numerous requests from
charities all over the world. A new one to me
was CANDII (Children's AIDS Network for
Interfaith Involvement.) This organization
operates out of Norfolk and serves the
Hampton Roads area. On June 1, 2003, the
12th Fine Arts Charity Auction will be held
at the Wells Theater in Norfolk, beginning at
2:00 p.m. If anyone can attend, please bring
back more information for us to evaluate.
The Food Bank in Newport News is
requesting donations to assist them in their
summer meals program. This takes up the
slack when school is over and the children
no longer get the hot, wholesome meal in
the middle of the day in school.
There are other requests, too many to list. One that needs to be mentioned however, is the Red Bird Mission. This Mission Conference was recently highly praised by Rev. LeGault at one of our Wednesday Night Fellowship sessions. Red Bird Mission is located in the heart of Appalachia - Beverly, KY; this multiplex mission is a United Methodist Mission which serves a very unique population in the depths of poverty. The economy and the rise in cost of living has played havoc with their funding. They have great needs for volunteers, funding and other types of contributions such as, clothing, food, furniture, books, and so much more. There is no doubt, the world is hurting and the poor suffer the most!
As Americans, we are a very wasteful
society. Time is catching up with us, we are destroying our
America the Beautiful heritage with over indulgence.
Our youth deserve a better world than we are leaving them.
Let us vow to re-use, recycle,
save and protect before "The Silent Spring"
arrives.
