| My Father |

My father used to take me by the hand And lead me out into a summer wood And teach my heart to love and understand The wind, the sun and shadow and the good Brown carpet of the leaves from other years. And he would tell me, "See the birds that bless The woodland kingdom; oftentimes their ears Hear loveliness we cannot even guess." My father was a man of simple speech; Though he possessed no eloquence of tongue, He taught me secrets so that I could reach Uplands of wonderment while I was young, And looking through his eyes, I learned to see The lighted foothills of eternity. |
