Most people in our congregation knew and loved Hildred, who was one of the most courageous people I have ever known. Before she died she asked me to tell "the world" about her disease. Hildred was diagnosed with CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISORDER (CMT) many years ago. This is an inherited neurological disease characterized by a slowly progressive degeneration of the muscles in the foot lower leg, hand and forearm, and a mild loss of sensation in the limbs, fingers, and toes. The first sign of CMT is usually a high-arched foot or gait disturbances. Other symptoms of the disorder may include foot bone abnormalities, problems with hand function and balance. CMT is genetic and therefore, inherited.
There is no cure or specific treatment for CMT. Custom made shoes and leg braces may enable more ambulation. Physical therapy and moderate activity are often recommended to maintain muscle strength and endurance. Severe disability is possible and may affect other organs of the body. Failure of a body system is usually the cause of death.
Research has been stepped up and the disorder is now recognized on the Jerry Lewis Telethon each Fall. Shortly before she died, Hildred was contacted by a medical reporter from a local TV station. She became too ill to be interviewed in person and that was a disappointment to her. Most people are not aware of this disorder and she wanted to spread the word. Hildred NEVER gave up and lived her faith everyday. She was a dear friend and inspiration to all who knew her. I visited her almost weekly for over a year and felt blessed each time I departed. The impact she made in this life will remain with us forever. I will never forget her.
