I confess I am addicted to "Recent Fiction." For me, it is a thrill to stand before a shelf of lovely new library books, some of which have never been read.
Sometimes I spot the latest work of a favorite author, but I also enjoy finding first-time treasures by new writers. I especially appreciate books so thoroughly researched that one learns interesting aspects of history or geography or becomes better acquainted with a particular culture.
Yet I sometimes fell guilty about reading when I could be "working."
The early Puritans thought it was a sin to read novels during productive day-light hours. Only the Bible was acceptable literature for them, to read and study after work was done.
When I'm reading, housework doesn't get done but more importantly the Word of God is being neglected. Like TV viewing, reading for pleasure must be kept in proper balance.
It takes self-discipline to put aside these worldly pleasures and turn to the Word of God, but the rewards far outweigh the efforts. How trivial the fictitious dialogues sound compared to the teachings and promises of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible will be read and revered long after the current crop of writers is gone from the earth.
And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3
