The month of April was designated as Heritage Month by the United Methodist General Conference. For United Methodist, this means celebrating the rich heritage from John Wesley and the many subsequent leaders who have gone into forming and shaping the United Methodist Church. We remember that John Wesley, our founder, was greatly concerned with social action which has become a significant part of the church's tradition.

When we think of our heritage, this means all which has come down to us from the past. We are grateful for our forefathers who have given us a nation that celebrates the freedoms which we cherish: the freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of worship.

So it behooves us to be alert to take political action against any of those forces that threaten our freedoms. This means that we should always be diligent in keeping informed concerning those threats and therefore be able to make informed voting decisions on issues that affect us.

Another heritage which we have is our environment. Currently, we enjoy the highest standard of living the world has even known. However, this high standard of living has come at a cost in several ways. Virginians are rightfully proud of their heritage and the natural wonders and resources of our state, and particularly in our Tidewater region.

However, there are some danger signals arising which should concern us:

There are other areas where we should be aware of forces that threaten our "good life." So what does all of this mean for us? Let us remember that it is our heritage, whether it be religious, commercial, political or social. It all boils down to the matter of stewardship: what we will do with what we have inherited, so that future generations can profit by our actions.

Jesus, in his teachings, had much to say about good stewardship. We read these words on the subject in I Peter 4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others faithfully, administering God's grace in its various forms." So let us be grateful for our rich heritage, but be good stewards of it that future generations can also be grateful.
