The final days of our PORT participation for this season are now over. We went to First Baptist Church and provided two breakfasts, one dinner and two overnights. There were approximately 85 - 90 for each meal and overnight. Thanks to all who helped, it went over smoothly. This year was a whole new experience for FUMC and we have learned a lot. We were hoping to see some new names among our volunteers, but only one or two appeared. Next winter when we start our program again, you will each have another opportunity to join with us. It is a wonderful blessing to be able to put your faith into action.
In the mission report last month, we reported the number of different participants who help to make our PORT program a success. Individual names were not named because there were too many to include, however, there is one group that needs to be brought to our attention. The youth of our church deserve special recognition for taking over one of the dinner meals. It was a great help and it showed that kind of leadership we have among our youth and among the advisors and teachers who work with them. Thank you for a great job. FUMC is proud of you! Did everyone see the picture (thanks, Bob) in the February issue of the Advocate? Young People of FUMC are the greatest! That means that the parents, teachers and advisors are the greatest also. Thank you one and all!
The communion offering for March was "One Great Hour of Sharing" and April will be the Lenten Offering. I will get the final figures and report the amounts next month. February was Heart Havens, but the notices did not get out in time for most to be aware. However, the UMM's pancake breakfast was a great success and that money is scheduled for Heart Havens as well as the collection taken at the Wednesday Night Fellowship on March 19. Thanks to the UMM and also to Jane LeGault!
Before taking this job, I never realized the amount of involvement the total church has with missions. Now I understand what was told to us at the Tri-district meeting at Virginia Wesleyan College in January. This remark was repeated at the Peninsula District Board of Missions meeting at St. James UMC in February.
Missions are not projects of the church
Missions are the purpose of the church.
