Resolution of Appreciation

Through this resolution the Church Council and congregation of the First United Methodist Church of Newport News, Virginia express their appreciation and gratitude for more than five decades of outstanding service rendered to this Church by

Harry A. Henkel, Jr.

It was in 1945 that Harry became a member of this church, then called the Hilton Village Methodist Church, and since that time his activities have touched just about every activity this church has ever undertaken.

His service to the Church was active from the very beginning, first as usher, then head usher. Next, he was elected to the Administrative Board where he held many offices, including secretary and chairman of that Board.

He was a member as well as chairman of the Board of Trustees where for many years during which time he was active in implementing construction of the educational building and improving the building in many other ways.

Harry was also extensively involved in the Christian education. He served as Adult Superintendent and as Church School Superintendent and teacher. He helped teach the first adult discussion class ever held at our Church.

Harry was an original director of the FUMC - Foundation where he served with distinction for the past 24 years. He was especially helpful in maintaining the Foundation's records and performing its administrative affairs.

Harry Henkel stands today an outstanding model of Christian service reflected in both his faithfulness as well as his willingness to do whatever needs to be done to make the Church function. The thing most remembered about Harry is that "he would do what he said he would do."

In recognition of his long and faithful service to the First United Methodist Church of Newport News, the Church Council and Congregation hereby acknowledges that service that was cheerfully rendered and, accordingly, in this month of November 2002, offer this

Resolution of Appreciation to
