First Church will be hosting the homeless
from January 1 - January 7. Our partner
churches are Hilton Baptist, Northside
Church of Christ and Yorkminster
Presbyterian. We need volunteers to be at
the church in shifts starting from 5:00 p.m.
each night to 8:00 a.m. each morning to
assist the partner churches when they come
to our church.
Sunday, January 5, we are responsible for the entire evening up to breakfast on January 6. The youth will be serving dinner, but we need volunteers to check in, spend the night and fix and serve breakfast and check out guests. On Wednesday, January 8 we will also serve breakfast the last morning we host, before the next host church, Chestnut UMC, picks up the supplies. Sign up or let June Loving know you can help.
Please be willing to help out in any way you can during this week. Some of you may have been hesitant to help out as a partner church, so this is the opportunity to see how this vital program works when we host it in our very own church home.
Thanks to all for donating toys to the "Share the Spirit Program." Our box was overflowing with love for children that are less fortunate.
50 families in Newport News were also blessed with food for one week during the holiday season because of your donations and time spent getting the boxes prepared.
Also thanks to those taking time out of the hectic holiday schedules to prepare food or help with the PORT Program December 16 and 17.
FUMC Family always comes through when asked to help out with mission projects in our church. As I step down from my position as local mission chairperson, and hand it over to June Loving, I know in my heart you will support her, as I will continue to do in God's love.

UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief is an extension of God's love, sharing the compassion of Christ wherever God's people are in need. In fact, UMCOR's current ministries, aiding refugees, providing relief in disaster areas, and confronting the challenge of world hunger and poverty are helping to heal the hurts of humanity in more than 100 countries. Established in 1940 as the "Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief" to respond to the horrific violence of World War II, UMCOR is now an institutionalized unit of the United Methodist denomination and part of the General Board of Global Ministries. From hurricanes in Haiti to families in Africa, from domestic floods and tornadoes to civil strife in Bosnia or Rwanda, UMCOR is there to rebuild the devastated lives of broken people, helping them to know the warmth of God's embrace.
