Nearly 150 CEOs gathered in New York on November 20 for an annual two-day conference in the city's most expensive hotel. Hurt, contrite and humbled, one person spoke for all when he said, "I was respected. I'm not respected anymore. I was trusted. I'm not trusted anymore." Another remarked, "We, as CEOs, need to focus on running companies for long-term value and sustainability. We need more accountability and less celebrity."
A book by the title, God is My CEO by Larry Julian, caught my eye in the library recently. Mr. Julian provides examples of 20 business leaders who excelled by placing their trust in the Lord and allowing Him to lead their lives.
Mr. Julian writes, "When you integrate God's principles with your unique talents, skills and character, you create a powerful partnership for being successful in the world without becoming of the world."
In one case, the author visited in 1999 Mr. S. Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A. At the company headquarters in Altanta, he drove along "a winding road through 73 acres of beautifully landscaped woods and ponds." At the main entrance he spotted Chick-fil-A's corporate purpose statement. It reads:
"To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us.
To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A."
Truett made the decision in 1946 to close all his restaurants on Sunday. As he told the author, "How can I teach the 13-year-old boys in my Sunday school class to observe the Lord's day if cash registers are jingling in my restaurants?"
Be joyful always, pray continuously, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
