United Methodist Men - Brochure - Page 6

Our Local Men's History/Heritage:

The church has always placed great importance on ministry with men. Men in the church have always had an important role in its leadership.

The local Methodist Men's Club was organized February 23, 1954, and the charter was dated June 11, 1954.

From the church's beginnings in 1919, a Methodist Men's Club was organized in 1925.

The first record of Scouting was in 1933 when a Campfire Girl's group was begun.

Men in mission and ministry go back to the time of Jesus Christ. The first Methodist Men's group was organized by Charles Wesley, and later was led by John Wesley in 1729. It was called the Holy Club. At its peak, there were twenty-seven members. It's purpose was to consider the Gospel and engage in good works.

A roster of UM Men local presidents and charter are in the hallway next to the Fellowship Hall.

Our men's group has always been part of our Methodist history. UM Men seek to work with pastors and organizations in the church.

Beginning in 1940, men's work was placed under the General Board of Lay Activities. Methodist Men became the official name.

This brochure has been prepared by Marion Baird at the request of William Knoble, 1998 President of the United Methodist Men. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. We urge every man to be an active member of our fellowship.
